Sr. Mary Anne Nuce, OSB


Sister Mary Anne Nuce, a member of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters of Holy Angels Convent for 70 years, died November 7, 2018. She was 86 years old.


Anna Maria was born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, to the late William and Lula Nuce. She entered the convent in 1948, while still attending Holy Angels Academy. She initially received the name Sister Mary Hildegard but later chose to be called Sister Mary Anne. She professed first vows in 1950 and final vows in 1954. Sister Mary Anne earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Arkansas State University. For 46 years, she served as a teacher and principal in Catholic schools in Arkansas and Texas. After her retirement from education, she served in Pastoral Care at St. Bernards before being appointed community Subprioress in 1999. Sister Mary Anne was elected Prioress in 2005 and reelected in 2008. After completing her terms of office, she returned to Pastoral Care and later served on the community Council and as a tutor at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. Throughout her religious life, Sister Mary Anne played the organ at various schools and parishes as well as at Holy Angels Convent.


She is survived by her Sisters in community; three sisters, Margaret Weyer, Emma Jeanne Gschwend, and Frances Sinnot; and many nieces and nephews.


Visitation will be at Holy Angels Convent on Sunday, November 11, at 6:30 p.m., with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m. in the convent chapel, and internment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery on the convent grounds.
